- Dr. Josef Mengele was a SS physician infamous for his inhuman experiments conducted at Auschwitz. Before joining the Nazis, Mengele was an assistant to Dr. Otmar von Verschuer who was a leading scientific figure in research with twins, which probably leads to future interest working at Auschwitz. In 1937 Josef joined the Nazis and the following year received his medical degree and joined the SS. While in action he was injured and returned to Germany and continued his work. In April of 1943 he was promoted to SS captain and transferred to Auschwitz in May of that year. At Auschwitz he would determine whether or not the new prisoners were fit to work or if they had to be sent to the gas chambers. He later went on to become the Chief Camp Physician and had an interest in using twins for medical research. This interest went to the point that even when off-duty he was looking for twins. His infamous experiments on twins was to trace the genetic origins of various diseases. His work had no limitations and which allowed for Mengele to perform painful and often lethal experiments on twins that were often children. Most of his test subjects died because of the experiments being performed or because they were killed to be examined. He wanted to publish a book over his work but fled Auschwitz because of the invading Soviet forces.
